The hidden cost of cheap ribbons
A barcode printhead costs ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 depending on your printer model. Most printheads last 50–100 km of print length — that's roughly 1–2 years of normal use.
But a cheap ribbon with poor backcoating can cut that life in half. The savings you get on ribbon price (₹10–20 per roll) gets wiped out by a single early printhead replacement.
Understanding how ribbons affect printhead life helps you make smarter purchasing decisions.
How the backcoating works
Every quality ribbon has three layers:
1. PET film base — the polyester carrier film (typically 4.5 microns thick) 2. Ink layer — wax, wax-resin, or resin ink on the front 3. Backcoating — a special silicone-based layer on the back
The backcoating is what touches the printhead. Its job: - Reduce friction between ribbon and printhead - Dissipate static electricity that attracts dust - Protect the printhead's ceramic heating elements from abrasion
Cheap ribbons either skip the backcoating entirely or use a thin, low-quality coating. Result: higher friction, faster printhead wear, static-related print defects.
Signs your ribbon is damaging your printhead
Watch for these early warning signs:
1. White vertical lines in print — dead dots on the printhead caused by abrasion 2. Increasing print darkness needed — as the printhead wears, you need higher temperature to get the same print density 3. Static-related defects — random spots or uneven ink transfer 4. Ribbon wrinkling — poor backcoating causes uneven tension 5. Residue buildup on printhead — cheap ink leaves deposits that further accelerate wear
If you see any of these, check your ribbon quality before blaming the printer.
What Codewell does differently
All CW-series ribbons feature a smooth backcoating that reduces printhead friction and dissipates static. This is true across all grades — from economy CW-11 to premium CW-33.
Our CW-12 Wax Premium was specifically formulated for extended printhead life. Its enhanced backcoating delivers measurably lower friction compared to standard wax ribbons — which is why it's our best seller among high-volume users.
The difference isn't just theoretical: customers who switched from generic ribbons to CW-12 report 30–50% longer printhead life in real-world use.
Tips to maximize printhead life
1. Use quality ribbons with proper backcoating — the single biggest factor.
2. Set correct print darkness — too high accelerates wear. Start low and increase until barcodes scan reliably.
3. Clean the printhead regularly — use IPA (isopropyl alcohol) wipes every 1–2 ribbon rolls. Takes 30 seconds.
4. Match ribbon to substrate — wax on paper, resin on synthetics. Wrong combinations require excessive heat.
5. Store ribbons properly — keep in original packaging, away from dust and direct sunlight.
6. Replace worn ribbons fully — don't reuse partially printed ribbons. The ink-depleted areas cause uneven printhead contact.
Following these practices, a quality printhead should last its rated life of 50–100 km.
