Garment Wash-Care Label Printing — Which Ribbon Survives 60 Washes?

4 min read10 Jul 2026

The wash-care label challenge

Every garment sold in India must carry a care instruction label under BIS IS 15640 and Bureau of Indian Standards guidelines — showing wash temperature, drying method, ironing instructions, and fabric composition. These labels are stitched into garments and must remain readable through the garment's entire life — which may mean 100+ wash cycles.

Standard thermal transfer ribbon — even premium wax-resin — is not designed for this. Standard ribbons print on paper or synthetic labels, not on woven fabric substrates like nylon tape or satin ribbon. And even on synthetic substrates, standard ribbons dissolve in hot water and detergent within 5–10 washes.

The substrate difference — nylon tape vs synthetic labels

Regular barcode labels are coated with a printable surface that accepts thermal transfer ink through a chemical bonding process. Nylon and satin care label tape has a completely different surface — the woven textile fibres create a textured, non-coated surface that most ribbons cannot bond to adequately.

A ribbon designed for wash-care must: 1. Bond mechanically into the nylon/satin fibres (not just surface adhesion) 2. Remain flexible (fabric flexes in wash — rigid ink cracks and flakes off) 3. Resist hot water and detergent (most inks dissolve in 60°C wash cycles) 4. Withstand tumble drying heat (up to 80°C) 5. Survive ironing (150°C+ on some care instructions)

CW-60 wash-care ribbon — what makes it different

Codewell CW-60 is formulated specifically for wash-care label printing on nylon and satin tape. Its resin-based ink system bonds mechanically with the fabric fibres, creating a print that withstands repeated washing.

Test performance: - Survives 60+ wash cycles at 40°C - Remains legible after 30 washes at 60°C - Withstands tumble drying at 80°C - Passes ironing test at 150°C (standard care label iron temperature) - Resists standard laundry detergents and fabric softeners

CW-60 works with nylon, satin, and woven polyester care label tapes on standard industrial garment label printers.

Which garment manufacturers need wash-care ribbon

Any garment manufacturer in India producing branded apparel needs wash-care ribbon for their care label printers. This includes:

- Apparel exporters printing ISO-standard care labels for US, EU, and UK markets - Domestic fashion brands printing BIS-compliant composition and care tags - Hosiery and innerwear manufacturers (where care labels face the most washes) - Sportswear manufacturers (performance fabrics require specific care instructions) - School uniform manufacturers (most frequently washed garment category)

For sari and traditional wear: if the garment has a fabric composition label, wash-care ribbon applies.

Surat, Tiruppur, Ludhiana, and Delhi garment clusters are the largest users of wash-care ribbon in India. Contact Codewell Image at +91-8800272088 for CW-60 samples.
