What FSSAI requires on food labels
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) mandates specific information on all packaged food products under FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations 2020. Required fields include: product name, ingredients list, nutritional information, batch/lot number, manufacturing date, best before/expiry date, MRP, manufacturer details, and FSSAI license number.
The key compliance requirement for printers: all mandatory information must remain clearly legible throughout the product's shelf life — from production to consumption. A label that fades, smudges, or becomes partially illegible violates FSSAI regulations, even if the information was correct when printed.
Why ribbon quality is a compliance issue
Food products face multiple environmental stressors during their shelf life: humidity in storage, moisture on refrigerated products, UV light in retail display, physical handling by consumers. Low-quality or incorrect ribbons produce prints that degrade under these conditions.
FSSAI inspectors check labels at retail — not just at the point of manufacture. A product that leaves the factory with a perfect label but arrives at retail with a smudged batch code is still a compliance failure.
Food manufacturers using low-quality wax ribbon on labels that face moisture have faced product seizures and notices from FSSAI for illegible mandatory information.
Recommended ribbons for FSSAI-compliant food labels
Dry, packaged goods (biscuits, snacks, pulses) with normal shelf life (<6 months): CW-12 premium wax on coated paper. High density, sharp print, adequate for dry storage.
Refrigerated products (dairy, processed meats, beverages): CW-20 or CW-22 wax-resin. Moisture-resistant print that survives condensation on cold pack labels.
Frozen food labels: CW-25 wax-resin super premium or CW-28 resin. Must survive freezer storage and condensation during thawing at retail.
Oil and grease-contact outer packaging (cooking oils, ghee): CW-22 or CW-28. Grease can migrate to label surfaces — wax ribbon dissolves in oil contact. Wax-resin or resin required.
Any product with shelf life >1 year: CW-22 minimum. For products stored 2+ years, CW-28 resin on synthetic label is recommended.
Getting FSSAI label compliance right
The easiest way to ensure FSSAI label compliance: 1. Identify the harshest condition your label will face (moisture, heat, UV, handling) 2. Select ribbon grade to exceed that condition — not just meet it 3. Test labels at shelf-life conditions before production launch 4. Document your ribbon grade, print settings, and test results for audits
