Wax-Resin Barcode Ribbons

The versatile middle grade — more durable than wax, cheaper than resin

Wax-resin blends both ink chemistries, and it is the grade most buyers actually need. It prints on coated papers and light synthetics that defeat wax, resists smudging and scratching far better, and costs meaningfully less than full resin. Codewell manufactures five wax-resin grades because the useful range within this category is wide.

Why five grades and not one

"Wax-resin" describes a ratio, not a recipe. Shift the balance toward resin and you gain chemical and abrasion resistance while needing more printhead heat; shift it toward wax and you gain speed and printhead life while giving up durability.

CW-15 sits at the eco end, manufactured with low-emission formulations in our DPCC-approved facility. CW-20 is the general-purpose workhorse. CW-22 raises smudge resistance and adhesion for pharma and industrial labelling. CW-25 approaches resin performance — cold chain, chemical containers, regulated labels — at wax-resin economics. CW-30 is built for extremes: temperature swings, heavy handling, high-speed lines.

The substrate question comes first

Choose by what you are printing on before you think about durability. Coated and semi-gloss papers take any wax-resin grade. Light synthetics and polyester start at CW-20. PP and PET generally want CW-22 or CW-25.

This ordering matters because a substrate mismatch fails immediately and visibly — the ink will not adhere — whereas a durability mismatch only shows up weeks later when a label in the field stops scanning. Pharma, food and cold chain

Wax-resin is the default across regulated Indian labelling. Batch codes and expiry dates on coated cartons need print that survives handling without smudging into illegibility — a smudged expiry date is a compliance problem, not a cosmetic one.

For cold chain specifically, the failure mode is condensation rather than cold itself. A label going from a freezer into ambient air develops condensation almost instantly, and that water layer is what lifts ink that has not properly bonded — the same mechanism that causes adhesive failure when labels are applied to frosted surfaces. Repeated freezer-to-ambient transitions, not the cold itself, are what kills cold-chain labels. CW-25 and CW-30 are the grades for that cycle, and synthetic stock beats paper here for the same reason.

Printer settings

Wax-resin needs more printhead energy than wax. Wax ink melts at around 65°C and tolerates print speeds up to roughly 14 inches per second; the more resin in the blend, the more heat and the more dwell time it needs, with full resin usually run at 6-10 ips. Switch from wax to wax-resin without adjusting and the print looks faint or patchy — which almost always gets misread as a bad ribbon rather than a settings mismatch.

Raise darkness in small steps and stop as soon as the barcode verifies. Running hotter than necessary shortens printhead life for no gain in scan rate.
