Wax Barcode Ribbons
The economy grade for paper labels in ordinary conditions
Wax is the highest-volume, lowest-cost thermal transfer ribbon grade, and for most paper-label printing it is the correct choice rather than a compromise. The ink layer is wax-based with a low melting point, so it transfers cleanly at modest printhead temperatures — which is also why it is gentler on the printhead than harder resin formulations.
When wax is the right choice
If your label is paper, stays indoors, and is read within weeks rather than years, wax does the job at the lowest cost per label. Shipping labels, carton markings, retail price tags, inventory barcodes and warehouse racking labels all sit comfortably here.
The economics matter at volume. A logistics operation printing tens of thousands of labels a month spends materially less on wax than on wax-resin, and gains nothing from the extra durability because the label is scanned and discarded within the supply chain.
Where wax stops working
Wax ink sits on the surface of the label rather than bonding into it. That makes it vulnerable to three things: abrasion from handling and stacking, moisture, and any solvent or oil contact.
It also will not bond properly to synthetic label stock. On polypropylene or polyester the ink has nothing to key into and scratches off with a fingernail. If your label is synthetic, you need wax-resin or resin — not a better wax.
CW-11 versus CW-12
CW-11 is the standard economy grade: clean, scannable barcodes on uncoated and matte-coated paper at the lowest cost.
CW-12 costs more per roll and earns it in two ways. Print density is higher, so barcodes scan more reliably on first pass — which matters when a scan failure costs a manual keystroke. And the backcoating is smoother, which reduces printhead friction. Over a printhead's service life that difference is usually worth more than the price gap between the two grades — a replacement printhead runs from roughly ₹4,000 for a desktop unit to ₹30,000+ for a wide industrial one.
Sizes and printer fit
Both grades are slit to order: widths from 25mm to 160mm, lengths from 50m to 600m, on ½-inch or 1-inch cores, inside or outside wound. The most commonly ordered size is 110mm × 300m on a 1-inch core, which fits most Zebra, TSC, Sato, Honeywell and Godex industrial models.
Ribbon should be slightly wider than the label, but only slightly. The industry convention is roughly 6mm of overhang in total — a 100mm label takes a 106mm ribbon. Too narrow and the printhead contacts the abrasive label edge directly, with no backcoating between them. Too wide and the unsupported margin has no platen roller beneath it, so it folds against the media guide and throws a diagonal crease across the print. Both failures get blamed on ribbon quality; neither is.
