Datamax thermal transfer ribbon sizes by model

Datamax thermal transfer ribbon sizes follow the printer. The E-Class Mark III desktop takes 110m on a ½ inch core, or 300m on a 1 inch core when Honeywell's ribbon core adapters are fitted. The M-Class Mark II takes 300m or 450m on a 1 inch core. The I-Class Mark II takes 600m on 1 inch. All three take ribbon coated inside or outside. The table gives the usual size, core and winding from Honeywell's documents.

Which Datamax thermal transfer ribbon for which label

The label decides the grade, not the printer. Find your label material below, then open the grade for its specification. Wax suits paper labels, wax-resin suits coated paper and light synthetics, and resin suits polyester, polypropylene and other films.

Datamax is now Honeywell: which printers this page covers

Datamax-O'Neil printers are now documented by Honeywell. This page covers three of them: the E-Class Mark III desktop and the M-Class Mark II and I-Class Mark II industrials. Honeywell's migration guide lists all three as discontinued and names replacements: the PC43 and PC42 for the E-Class, the PD45 for the M-Class, and the PM45 and PM43 for the I-Class. So these pages are for printers already in service, and the ribbon sizes below come from Honeywell's data sheets and operator's manuals for them.

E-Class Mark III: a ½ inch core, or 1 inch with core adapters

The E-Class Mark III is the one Datamax model here that takes a ½ inch core as standard. Honeywell's manual gives 110m on a ½ inch core, or 300m on a 1 inch core, and says a ribbon on a 1 inch core must be fitted on the ribbon core adapters supplied with the printer. Ribbon width runs from 25mm to 110mm, centred on the core.

The manual also describes the ribbon as coated side in or coated side out, and the loading steps begin by asking you to find which type you have. It names no optional part for either. Check your old roll before you order, because a 300m roll on a 1 inch core is a different size from a 110m roll on a ½ inch core.

M-Class and I-Class Mark II: 1 inch core, wider ribbon, longer rolls

The M-Class Mark II and I-Class Mark II both use a 1 inch core, and both accept ribbon up to 114.3mm wide, wider than the 110mm of the E-Class. Honeywell's data sheet gives the M-Class rolls of 300m or 450m, and its manual gives the core as 25.6mm, plus or minus 0.2mm, inner diameter. The I-Class takes 600m on a 25.4mm core.

Both take ribbon coated side in or coated side out, and Honeywell's documents show a loading path for each rather than an optional part. We slit up to 160mm and from 25mm.

Send the model, label width, core, winding, roll length and number of rolls. Standard sizes have no minimum order, and a free sample lets you test on your own printer. Lengths run from 50m to 600m, and MSDS is available on request.

Technical notes

Datamax ribbon compatibility details

Core sizes: ½ inch on the E-Class Mark III, or 1 inch with Honeywell's ribbon core adapters; 1 inch on the M-Class and I-Class Mark II. Winding: all three take ribbon coated side in or coated side out, with no optional part named in Honeywell's documents. Honeywell's migration guide lists them as discontinued, so this page is for printers still in service. Ask us to confirm your model.

Datamax E-Class, M-Class and I-Class printers are now documented by Honeywell. Honeywell's migration guide lists them as discontinued and points to current Honeywell models, which have their own page.

Datamax ribbon: common questions

What ribbon does a Datamax E-Class Mark III take?+

Honeywell's manual gives two rolls: 110m on a ½ inch core, or 300m on a 1 inch core fitted on Honeywell's ribbon core adapters. Ribbon runs from 25mm to 110mm wide, coated side in or out.

Do Datamax printers take inside or outside wound ribbon?+

The E-Class Mark III, M-Class Mark II and I-Class Mark II all take ribbon coated side in or coated side out, and Honeywell's documents name no optional part for either. We cut both windings.

Which ribbon length for a Datamax M-Class Mark II or I-Class Mark II?+

Honeywell gives the M-Class Mark II rolls of 300m or 450m and the I-Class Mark II 600m. Both take a 1 inch core and ribbon from 25.4mm to 114.3mm wide.

Are Datamax printers still made, and who supports them?+

Datamax is now part of Honeywell, and Honeywell's migration guide lists the E-Class, M-Class and I-Class as discontinued, with newer Honeywell models as replacements. We still cut ribbon for printers in service: send the model and a photo of the old roll.
