Why ribbon width matters more than you think
The most common mistake in ribbon purchasing: ordering ribbon that matches your printer's maximum width instead of your label width.
If your label is 50mm wide, you don't need a 110mm ribbon. You'll waste 60mm of ribbon on every label — doubling your consumable cost.
The rule: ribbon width should be 5–10mm wider than your label width. This small overhang ensures full coverage without wasted material.
How to measure your label width
Measure the label along the direction it feeds through the printer — this is the print width. Don't confuse it with label height (the feed direction).
For a 100mm × 150mm shipping label that feeds lengthwise, the print width is 100mm. Your ribbon should be 105–110mm wide.
Codewell offers custom widths from 25mm to 160mm — we slit from jumbo rolls to your exact requirement, so there's zero waste in our process.
Understanding ribbon length and cost-per-label
Ribbon length determines how many labels you print per roll. Longer ribbon rolls mean fewer changeovers and lower cost-per-label.
Example: a 300m ribbon prints roughly 2,000 labels at 150mm label height. A 600m ribbon prints 4,000 labels with one changeover instead of two.
For high-volume operations (logistics, e-commerce), longer rolls save significant downtime. For smaller operations, shorter rolls (50–100m) avoid waste.
Codewell lengths: 50m, 74m, 100m, 200m, 300m, 450m, 600m — or any custom length.
Core size: half-inch vs one-inch
The core is the cardboard tube inside the ribbon roll. Your printer accepts one specific core size — check your printer manual.
Half-inch (½") core: used in most desktop printers (TSC TDP-225, Zebra GK420T, etc.)
One-inch (1") core: used in most industrial printers (Zebra ZT230, TSC TTP-244 Pro, Sato CL4NX, etc.)
Codewell offers both core sizes. We also provide cores with punching (notched cores) for printers that require them — common in Zebra and Datamax models.
Winding direction: inside vs outside wound
Inside wound (ink faces inward) — most common. Used in the majority of flat-head printers.
Outside wound (ink faces outward) — required by some near-edge printers and specific printer models.
Check your printer's specification sheet or the existing ribbon in your printer. When in doubt, inside wound is the safe default.
Codewell supplies both winding directions across all ribbon grades.
